Local roundup: Greenfield girls tennis bow out in MIAA Div. 4 tourney
Rebecca Covalenco notched the lone win of the afternoon for the Greenfield girls tennis team, which saw its season come to an end on Wednesday.
The 35th-seeded Green Wave dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 30 Winthrop in the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 4 Girls Tennis Tournament in Winthrop.
Covalenco notched a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles to pace Greenfield, which finished its season 9-8 overall. Winthrop advanced to play at No. 3 Lynnfield in the Round of 32 on Thursday.
Amy Mihailicenco played well at first singles for the Wave, dropping a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 decision.
Joseph Case 3, Mohawk Trail 2 – The 34th-seeded Warriors finished their season 9-9 overall, falling on the road in Swansea on Wednesday.

Mashpee 3, Turners Falls 2 – The 32nd-seeded Thunder saw their season come to an end on Wednesday, as visiting Mashpee notched a 3-2 win to book a ticket to the Round of 32.
Mike Boyle picked up a 6-3, 6-3 triumph in No. 1 singles while Noah Kolodziej earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory in No. 2 singles for Turners.
The Pickleball Food Drive Festival took place on Saturday in Greenfield, with Chad Odwazny and Easton Smith knocking off Chris Malo and Joe Joseph Harney, 11-6, in the Main Street Bar & Grill Open Division.
Genevieve Garanin and Nate Smith beat Ellen Abraham and Jayson Stebbins in the Hope and Olive Mixed Doubles Division (11-6) while
Main St Bar & Grill OPEN DIVISION– Chad Odwazny & Easton Smith: 11-6 winners over Chris Malo & Joe Joseph Harney while Matt Bete and Wayne Borkowski beat Ken Cook and Bob Austin in the Real Pickles 55 & Over Division (11-6).
The tournament raised $2,455 for The Food Bank of Western MA and Stone Soup Cafe and 556 lbs which will be delivered to the Stone Soup Cafe Free Store for local distribution.

Pipione’s Sports Shop 5, Elks Club 3 – Rachel Laffey, Lycinia Guillemette and Alexis Preissler all had run-scoring hits on Wednesday, while Savannah Daignault, Kacie Cadran and Eleanor Jones also smacked key hits.

Booska’s Flooring 16, Greenfield Savings Bank 1 – Ryan Newton was 2-for-2 with a home run, triple and three RBIs, and Asa Stebbins went 2-for-2 with an inside-the-park HR and two RBIs to lift Booska’s to victory in Game 1 of a best-of-three playoff series.
GSB’s Camden Cogswell pitched three innings, and added a hit and the team’s lone run. The teams will meet again Thursday night.
TFAC 2, Elks 1 – Hunter Kelley struck out 17 in six innings, and added a double to lift Turners Falls Athletic Club on Wednesday. Carmelo Bashaw added two singles in the win, while Xavier Correa singled and scored the winning run.
Jack Carney struck out 11 in five innings for the Elks, while Sammy Chevalla doubled and Tyler Varilly singled.

Denny’s 14, Gilmore & Farrell’s 7 – Quest Petersen had three hits, while Andrew Gardner, Liam Bassett, Aaron Turner and Fred Burnap all had two hits in Denny’s victory on Wednesday.
Theo D’Urso, Michael Dixon, Ted McCarthy and Paul Budrawich all had two hits for G & F.
Gagne Wealth 10, Fitzgerald Real Estate 8 — Jack Merrigan and Phillip Hannon each had two hits and two RBIs while Kydanie Rivera had a hit and pitched in Gagne’s win Tuesday.
Jacolby Dyer cracked three hits while Raylan Beckwith and Abraham Walker both had two hits for Fitzgerald.
Baker Financial Group 13, Parody Builders 7 — Crosby Cairney and Ollie Nestor each had three hits in Baker’s win Tuesday.
Forest Russell and Boston Westerman both had two hits for Parody.

Hilltown Tents 3, Longmeadow Cardinals 2 – Colin Cloutier had two hits, including a double, and an RBI to help the Tents notch a victory on Tuesday.
Sam Schreiber had an RBI single in the win, while Tyler McDonald and Turner Clews also had hits.
TJ Thibeault threw 2 1/3 innings allowing two runs and had three strikeouts, while Gabe Gochinski picked up the win in relief throwing 2 2/3 innings. Owen Phelps tossed scoreless sixth and seventh frames to earn the save, striking out three.
Greenfield Coed
Liberty Tax Sharks 13, Common Ground Fitness 11 – Che Christi smacked four hits, including a triple, while Kyle Conway had three hits and three RBIs, and Mike Cole roped two hits, including a home run and two RBIs, to pace the Sharks.
Common Ground Fitness was led by Brian Ginnity’s four hits (HR, two doubles) and three RBIs. Nick Aldrich (two hits, four RBIs) and Courtney Roland (two hits, two RBIs) were other key contributors.
Bober sinks ace
Larry Bober recorded the first hole-in-one of his career on Wednesday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.
Bober aced the 7th hole using his 7 iron. Blaine Perrault witnessed the feat.
