Callaway’s new Opus wedges deliver a fresh look and added spin

Callaway’s newest Opus wedges combine modern technology with classic looks.

After prototypes surfaced earlier this year, golfers have patiently been waiting for Callaway to release their newest Opus wedges. Now, after years of R&D with the world’s best golfers and countless iterations, they are set to arrive with two new versions coming to retail starting July 26, 2024, and with a starting price of $180.

As for victories, the new Opus wedges have already won two majors; Xander Schauffele at the 2024 PGA Championship and Yuka Saso at the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open. Opus wedges have also been used to rack up other wins on the PGA Tour thanks to lefty Akshay Bhatia and Chris Kirk, plus a win on the LPGA tour thanks to Ruoning Yin.

Opus wedge technology

For drivers, we talk distance, for irons we talk forgiveness, and with wedges, we talk spin — and there is no shortage of spin with Callaway’s newest Opus wedges thanks to a combination of technologies to better grip the cover of the golf ball, which when combined is called Spin Gen face technology.

The first component is a new tighter pitch of the grooves which allows them to be placed closer together — the closer the grooves the more gripping power they have, just like treads on a tire.

The new Spin Gen micro grooves help when the face is opened to add traction and spin.

The second component of Spin Gen is the offset groove-in-groove with angled micro features. These small grooves work under all conditions, but especially help when the face is opened and they run perpendicular to the swing path for added traction and more spin.

Last but not least, the wedge engineers at Callaway went beyond the desks and counters of their design studio to find that quartz makes for the perfect blasting material to create an even more aggressive face blast texture to add spin and bite, especially on partial shots hit at slower speeds.

Opus shaping and grinds

This is where Callaway went deep into the weeds with their tour players to create their most tour-tested wedges ever.

The Opus wedges feature a higher toe profile along with specific radii through the lofts to improve looks from address, plus the topline to hosel transition has been slimmed down to be more appealing.

On the underside of the wedges, four redesigned sole grinds help them sit closer to the ground on open-face shots and improve speed through the turf.

To add one more level of technology and performance, Callaway is also announcing the Opus Platinum wedges which are made through the process of MIM — metal injection molding to deliver even more precision through the manufacturing process. The wedges have 17 grams of tungsten bonded to the back of the topline to raise the center of gravity to help further improve launch and control spin into greens.

These technologies are on top of the Spin Gen face and new tour-preferred shaping.
