Arguably assembling their most stacked roster since the 1992 Dream Team, The United States began their quest for a fifth consecutive gold medal with a with a challenging home task against Canada. Team USA came out sluggish, falling behind 11-1. The star-studded bunch shook off the cobwebs and enforced their will with a suffocating 86-72 victory.

Anthony Edwards led the U.S. with 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting while Steph Curry added 12 points and connected on a trio of 3-pointers. Anthony Davis settled into the post with 10 points and 11 rebounds while LeBron James had seven points. The Laker teammates were part of an overall contribution from a loaded lineup.

Team USA shot 50.8% from the field.

The United States went on a 14-2 second quarter run, fueled by the bench production from Edwards, Jayson Tatum and Bam Adebayo. The tide turned into a 41-33 lead at the break. On cue, Curry caught fire to open the third quarter with a pair of 3′s in just over a minute.

RJ Barrett paced Canada with 12 points and five rebounds while Dillon Brooks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander each had 10 points. The Canadians were held to 33.8% from the field. Canada trimmed the lead to five in the third quarter, but would be unable to shave it any further.

The game was played a T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas and brought in a record-breaking crowd of 20,757.

The United States automatically qualified for the Paris Summer Olympics after finishing as one of the top two countries in the Americas Zone at the FIBA World Cup last summer. Shockingly, Team USA finished fourth after losing the bronze medal match against Canada. The lackluster performance propelled a call-to-arms for the 2024 Summer Games.

Scouting the United States

The Americans are stacked with an expected starting five which would be relatable to an NBA All-Star team. They check all the boxes with size, speed and savvy skills at every area of the court.

While talent is their strength, their largest weakness will be meshing together in a competitive environment. Normally, when this type of squad comes together, it’s a free for all with no defense at the All-Star break. That was not the case against the Canadians. The Americans hunkered down and flipped the script with a suffocating detail. They will need to play sound basketball on both sides of the ball to avoid any slip ups from top tier adversaries. With that said, The United States remain on track to be favorites in every encounter.

It’s Curry’s first Olympics, as well as Joel Embiid’s first time on the USA national team after a fierce courting over France. This will likely be James’ final swan song at the prestigious games. The roster is saturated with NBA greats such as Kevin Durant and Davis, and also features a mixed bag of new-era talent highlighted by Edwards, Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton.

The lineup is fairly healthy despite Kawhi Leonard withdrawing from Team USA on July 10 due to concerns with a surgically-repaired right knee. Second Team All-Defense selection Derrick White took the vacated spot.

Durant did not play against Canada and is expected to miss the match against Australia as well due to a left calf strain that has sidelined him since joining Team USA in training camp.

Team USA is 35-3 in pre-Olympic exhibition games.

Scouting Australia

The Boomers are opening up their exhibition schedule with the behemoth known as Team USA. Guided by Brian Goorjian, Team Australia is a steady blend of savvy NBA veterans with a few up-and-coming stars. Josh Giddy headlines the group, which is ranked No. 5 nationally.

Their Olympic outlooked is a brutal Group A – Group of Death – pairing with Greece, Canada and Spain.

The Boomers strength comes in the form of their vast array of Aussie veterans who have made their name in the NBA for years. While they don’t have the star power of a Canada, per say, the Australians present unique problems for opponents with their intelligent play and pesky play.

The United States shook off the rust in their opener. It could be time to unload their firepower in the Emirates.
