Basketball
Check out this video from the Democratic Republic of Congo Basketball
A friend shared this Instagram post from DR Congo Basketball (@dr.congo.basketball):
“The game of basketball continues to grow in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and especially in Kivu, Eastern Congo.
“Despite an ongoing war and unsolicited attacks by militias from our neighboring country, the Congolese passion for basketball is unmatched in the world. Basketball provides the local population a temporary form of distraction from reality.
“DR Congo Basketball is an organization dedicated to the development of Congolese Basketball. Through our initiatives, we hope to play an important part in developing the next generation of Congolese basketball players.”
Check out the viewers, packed tight and hanging out on balconies, completely engulfed in the game below. The court looks like it has been fashioned out of a common area for an apartment complex.
The way shadows cast upon the court, players have had to learn how to play specifically based on the angle of the sun. For those of us who grew up on similar playgrounds and outdoor courts, conforming to the uniqueness of any court can be as important as how one plays on the game.
The sport of basketball is truly global, and no more apparent than in this clip.
