New Ferry Captains Speak Highly of Newest Addition to the Fleet

Two of the captains of the Ala’suinu, Marine Atlantic’s newest vessel, are enjoying how the ship is working thus far.

The ferry, which had been plagued with mechanical issues, finally made its first voyage from Nova Scotia to Argentia this week.

Capt. Heidi Thomas was at the helm for the trip, and says it was a great feeling to be there for the first crossing.

With the addition of the Ala’suinu, Thomas has captained all of the ships in Marine Atlantic’s fleet — the others being the Blue Puttees, Highlanders and the Leif Ericson.

Stan Peet, the current captain of the new ship, without hesitation says his favourite area of the new vessel is deck 10.

He says they were on the vessel coming from Singapore to Cape Town, South Africa, and deck 10 felt like a “high-rise hotel.”

He believes that viewing area will be a hit among travellers.
