Vancouver’s Chinatown was made over to look like a post-apocalyptic Seattle this week for filming of Season 2 of the hit HBO series The Last of Us.
Snapshots of the Hollywood North set were shared around social media on Tuesday showed overgrown greenery and defunct vehicles — including a city bus marked ‘King County Metro’ — littering the area around Pender and Columbia streets.
Fans of the show had plenty to talk about this week as, along with the images from the outdoor set in Chinatown, a personal message from the series co-creator/writer /executive producer Neil Druckmann was shared online.
Druckmann, who directed the season-one episode titled Infected, wrote on @TheLastofUsNews Instagram account that he has wrapped an episode of season 2 that has been shooting in the Vancouver area since mid-February this year. It is slated to end shooting on Aug. 21.
Online sleuths are guessing that Druckmann’s latest directorial effort is episode six of the seven-episode series set to go to air in 2025.
“My time in Vancouver has come to an end,” Druckmann wrote. “I’ve had a wonderful time collaborating with some incredibly talented and kind cast and crew. Can’t wait for y’all to see what we’re cooking!”
The photo Druckmann shared shows the production clapboard, where he is credited as an episode director, and a watch with English Bay in the background.
The watch in question looks an awful lot like the one that Joel (Pedro Pascal) wears in the series. Those who watched season 1 are likely familiar with the watch — and its importance to the character.
The Last of Us is an American post-apocalyptic drama series created by Druckmann and Craig Mazin for HBO. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, the series is set 20 years into a pandemic caused by a fungal infection that causes hosts to become “infected,” zombie-like creatures and subsequently leads to the collapse of society.
