Louisiana Downs cancels Monday due to rain from hurricane

Louisiana Downs canceled its racing card Monday due to the effects of Hurricane Beryl.

Roxanne Tanner, a racing ambassador for Louisiana Downs, posted to X on Monday afternoon about the races being canceled. According to a report by Sean Collins at BloodHorse, citing a statement on FanDuel TV, the track lost power as well.

According to the National Weather Service there is a 90 percent chance of rain and a chance of new rainfall between 3/4 inch and an inch Monday in Shreveport, the closest weather station to Bossier City, where the track is located. A 20 percent chance of rain continues into Tuesday morning, though forecasters predict that the weather will be cloudy and later mostly sunny as the day goes on.

Racing is scheduled to resume Tuesday at Louisiana Downs, with first post at 5:05 p.m. EDT. The richest events on Tuesday’s seven-race card are a pair of allowance-level turf miles with $20,000 purses.

The fifth race, open to fillies and mares who are non-winners of two races lifetime, features 5-2 morning-line favorite Signing. A 3-year-old Constitution filly trained by Shane Wilson, Signing broke her maiden at a mile on the Louisiana Downs grass last out. She and second-place Merrily Rush over 20 lengths clear of the rest of the field. Merrily Rush, trained by Jonathan Wong, is also entered in Tuesday’s allowance race at 8-1 morning-line odds.

Tuesday’s seventh is an allowance-optional claiming turf mile. The 3-1 morning-line favorite is Moment of Stardom. A 6-year-old Star Guitar gelding trained by Shane Wilson, Moment of Stardom is a two-time allowance winner against Louisiana-breds at this year’s Fair Grounds meet. The race also features Cazadero, winner of the 2020 Bashford Manor (G3) and 2022 Nearctic (G2). Now trained by Jonathan Wong, Cazadero seeks his first win since the Nearctic two years ago, though he was most recently second in a turf dash at this same optional-claiming level at Evangeline on June 21.
