Golf tournament to help local meningitis patient

Tee off to help Tyler McMahon and his family.

Vankleek Hill resident and National Hockey League (NHL) linesman Steve Barton is hosting the 2024 Steve Barton Golf Classic on Wednesday, July 24 at Hawkesbury Golf and Curling Club. Every cent raised at the golf tournament will support Tyler McMahon and his family. In September 2023, the Vankleek Hill resident, who is a husband and father of two young children was rushed to hospital where his health deteriorated quickly, and he was fighting for his life when he was ultimately diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. McMahon was in an Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator for months before stabilizing enough to move into a rehabilitation centre. McMahon continues extensive rehabilitation therapy and the prognosis for his recovery is not completely clear. He will need specialized equipment to live at home and extensive therapy to improve his chances of a full recovery.

All funds raised at the Steve Barton Golf Classic will go directly to the McMahon family and to the Meningitis Foundation to support building awareness, research and to support other affected families in Eastern Ontario.

“Life can change quickly but knowing that you have a community around you to assist when necessary is something very special about our area,” Barton said.

A cocktail reception, dinner, and auction will follow the golf game on July 24.
