Big-serving Frenchman may be too hot to handle

No one served more aces in the first round than France’s new star-in-the-making Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

He showed a cool temperament during two rain breaks and an ability to read Sebastian Korda before ousting the 20th seed on Tuesday amid a battery of 51 unplayable serves.

The 20-year-old should be too hot for Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka to handle when they meet in the second round – a stage that the 28-year-old has never been beyond during six previous appearances in the main draw at Wimbledon.

Fils will find Hurkacz too tough

Hubert Hurkacz sent down 82 aces at SW19 en route to a fourth-round exit at the hands of Djokovic 12 months ago, but some have been tipping the seventh seed to go deep again this time around.

He began his campaign with a four-set win over qualifier Radu Albot and should make further progress when he faces 20-year-old Frenchman Arthur Fils in round two.

Fils won his first match at Wimbledon on Tuesday when he beat fellow young gun Dominic Stricker in four, but that was his Swiss opponent’s first top-level match since October due to a back injury and this will be much tougher.

Wozniacki up to the task against Fernandez  

Caroline Wozniacki has played selectively this season as she combines tennis with motherhood, but she showed she remains capable of mixing it with the best when she tested Coco Gauff at last year’s US Open.

The Dane’s recent performances suggest she can make it through against 30th seed Leylah Fernandez, who laboured a little in beating Lucia Bronzetti 6-4, 6-3 in her opener.

Wozniacki got 74% of her first serves in and won 82% of the points on her first serve while also converting all five of her break-point opportunities against America’s Alycia Parks, who beat Fernandez at the Australian Open in January.

Comesana can be awkward for fellow Wimbledon newcomer 

The second round men’s match-up between Francisco Comesana and Adam Walton will be a step into the unknown as neither man has much of a profile at Wimbledon.

Walton is a bit of a latecomer to big-time tennis at 25, having played the first two Grand Slam events of his career earlier this year.

The Australian saw off Argentinian clay-courter Federico Coria in straight sets on Tuesday and may be expecting to face a similar opponent when he sees Comesana across the net from him.

But Coria’s countryman showed an impressive grasp of grasscourt tactics in downing sixth seed Andrey Rublev with a mixture of sliced crosscourt backhands and drop shots alongside a solid serve.

Comesana should not be a heavy underdog for this clash given both players are making their Wimbledon debuts this year and the South American has already posted a big win.
