How To Pack A Backpack For Hiking

Hiking season is officially upon us, so it’s time to prepare your hiking backpack for all the fun adventures you’ll take this summer. Whether you’re just getting started with hiking or a seasoned vet, it never hurts to learn new skills on how to pack — and what to pack — to ensure the best possible hiking experience regardless of what Mother Nature throws your way.

How to pack a hiking backpack efficiently:

Packing efficiently requires some know-how, but that’s what we’re here for! You want to split your backpack into zones for the most optimal space-saving and comfortable carry capabilities.

Zone 1 is the bottom of your backpack. In this area, you should put lighter and larger items, such as a packable puffer or an emergency blanket or sleeping bag. They will create a base for the rest of your load and are likely the last things you’ll need.

Zone 2 should be saved for the heaviest items, such as food, water, headlamps and lanterns, flashlights, and power banks. It will keep the weight distribution in the centre of the backpack, so the load feels more natural and you’re able to stay balanced.

Zone 3 is the top of the bag and can be used to store your first-aid essentials as well as medium-weight items, such as extra layers or a water treatment system.

The side pockets are perfect for storing small items you’ll want to always have on hand, such as a multi-tool, GPS or compass, a map, an extra water bottle, or a packable rain jacket. Be sure to evenly distribute the weight on both sides when using the side and accessory pockets.

A good rule of thumb when determining how much stuff you need and how much weight you should be carrying is to check how much the pack weighs against your own weight. It should be a quarter to one-third of your body weight and no more to ensure a comfortable, yet prepared, hike.
