The two newest ferries in the provincial fleet continue to rack up millions in repair bills and wreak havoc on the intra-provincial schedule.
The Veteran and the Legionnaire were acquired by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador during the PC administration and right from the outset things did not go well. The Veteran, which normally services the Change Islands-Fogo run, remains on drydock though it is expected to be back in service soon.
Transportation Minister John Abbott says the repair bills totaled $21 million as of March 31, so that’s not even counting the current repair job which is expected to be in the millions.
Even though the boats are only seven or eight years old, Abbott says the engines will have to be replaced in the next year or so.
He says government is doing their best but he understands why people are upset.
Three vessels are currently on drydock and they have brough in a replacement but they are looking for more. He says they are very difficult to find.
