‘4-5 Pakistan players were sleeping in dressing room’: Mohammad Hafeez slams Pakistani players’ attitude

After the Pakistan cricket team was sent home early from the ongoing T20 Cricket World Cup, the knives are out back home for the players.

Many former Pakistan cricketers have lampooned the team, which never got off the ground at the World Cup, losing their opening match to Team USA via a super over. Then, they fumbled a seemingly-easy chase against India. And while their fate was sealed due to intervention from the weather, Pakistan’s performance has copped plenty of flak back home.

Now, a video has emerged where former Pakistan player Mohammad Hafeez, who was the national team director from November 2023 to February 2024, has lashed out against Pakistan players due to their attitude.

Recalling an incident from a Test match in an interview with former cricketers Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan, Hafeez said, “You tell me Gilly, if a player is sleeping in the dressing room and we are playing Test cricket… Four-five players were sleeping in the dressing room, should I allow that as a team director?”

Festive offer

When probed further if the players were sleeping because they were tired, Hafeez explained, “I really don’t know. I went into the dressing room and found four-five players are sleeping in the dressing room while playing Test cricket. I was like, ‘how come you guys can do that? If you do something like this, you cannot be a part of this team. I want you guys to stay focussed during the game.’ Off the game, whatever the guys do, it is their own life, I never get involved in it. But in professional timings of the game, I want the team guys to focus on the game. Stay in touch. If you are a fast bowler, you can have a rest, a good ice bath but you need to concentrate on the game of cricket, like how the other team is also doing. You cannot switch yourself off during the game, but unfortunately the media (in Pakistan) didn’t like it.”
