2024 State of A-State: Men’s Golf

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – The State of A-State series continues. It’s summer updates on Red Wolves sports.

Arkansas State golf camp will have two sessions this month. Kids can learn from the pack July 16th, 17th, 23rd, and 24th at Sage Meadows. “Oh it’s a blast,” said men’s head golf coach Mike Hagen. “These are some of the fun weeks obviously. You get to work with a lot of the youth in the area. We get some young ones, and get some in their teens that have played a little more golf than some of the others. It makes it fun. You’re trying to teach the basics of the game to these young kids, and makes you feel young again.”

There’s plenty to howl about for Mike Hagen’s Red Wolves after a Sun Belt Championship and a NCAA Regional appearance. Arkansas Junior Amateur champ Cole Kirby joins a pack with plenty of postseason experience.

“We have 5 of our top 7 coming back,” Hagen added. “Even have Chris Somerfield, who came in and won that one match for us in the Sun Belt in match play, he wasn’t in the stroke play portion. So we have a lot of guys, sophomores, juniors, and even Jake Lile, a true freshman who really played great down the stretch. So being in that situation, playing in that type of field for those guys and hold their own, like you said, it’s going to give us a lot of momentum.”

Arkansas State’s 2024-25 schedule will features trips to Las Vegas, Arizona, and San Diego. The Red Wolves will have the annual Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate in the fall plus a new spring tournament at RidgePointe Country Club.

“We have some schools that normally want to come down from the Northeast,” Hagen said. “You’ve got Xavier and some different schools that would like to come down and get in some warmer weather. So we’re going to host one before the Sun Belt Championship. So we’ll have 10 events: 9 team events with that 1 individual event, accounting for our 24 days.”
