New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll burst onto the scene in 2022, leading Big Blue to a record of 9-7-1, their first playoff berth since 2016 and their first postseason victory since Super Bowl XLVI.
That was a significant turnaround for a Giants team that went 4-13 a year prior and had been floundering for a decade. In fact, it was impressive enough that Daboll was named the 2022 AP Coach of the Year.
However, in 2023, everything came crashing back down to earth as the Giants regressed and reports arose about Daboll’s temperament. Those issues boiled over after the season when Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale clashed, leading to the latter’s resignation.
Several other coaches were also fired or departed on their own. Meanwhile, rumors persisted that others wanted to leave because of Daboll’s explosiveness.
Heading into the 2024 season, Daboll has assumed near-complete control of the team and is poised to take over play-calling duties from Mike Kafka, who was given what amounts to an honorary “assistant head coach” title.
