From June 17 to August 9, GoMatadors.com will present the top CSUN Moments from the 2023-24 sports season. Today, we celebrate the Matador women’s tennis team for posting their best conference win percentage since joining the Big West.
The 2024 season saw its share of high moments for the CSUN women’s tennis team. Under the direction of 27-year head coach Gary Victor and led on the court by a talented and deep roster, the Matadors would achieve their best conference win percentage since joining the Big West in 2001. In 2024, CSUN finished with a 13-7 overall record to go with a 7-2 Big West record, finishing in second place in the conference standings. The conference win percentage of .778 was the team’s best since the 2001 season when the Matadors played in the Big Sky Conference.
CSUN began the season red hot at 6-1, capped by a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over eventual Big West champion Cal Poly. The Matadors also posted a 4-0 start to Big West play this season, clinching the program’s best start to conference action since the 2008 season. Down the stretch of the regular season, the Matadors picked up a 5-2 home win over Long Beach State followed by the team’s first victory against Hawai’i since 2015 on Senior Day to close the regular season.
While the Matadors would fall to UC Davis in the opening round of the Big West Championship, the Matadors’ achievements during the 2024 season would not go unnoticed. After the conclusion of the season, the Matadors were ranked No. 74 in the national ITA rankings, marking the first time the program was ranked since 2015. CSUN also received a spot in the top-25 Mid Major rankings at No. 24.
Four Matadors received All-Big West honors for their efforts this season highlighted by the team’s No. 1 pair of Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna earning All-Big West First Team accolades. Turchak and Zhytelna led CSUN doubles teams in wins with an 11-5 record while going 6-2 in Big West play.
