2 Canadian airlines joint venture begins from Pearson Airport in Mississauga and beyond | insauga

A joint venture between two Canadian airlines officially started this month.

In November, Toronto’s Porter Airlines and Montreal-based Air Transat announced a joint venture to combine both airline’s networks.

The two airlines have had a code-sharing agreement since October 2022.

Porter started operating out of Pearson Airport in Mississauga last year and introduced daily flights to Saskatoon International Airport starting May 16 this year. And with the new venture with Air Transat, the airline is expected to grow more this year.

“Porter is in the midst of disrupting the North American market through a significant continental expansion that will only be amplified by this Alliance,” said Michael Deluce, president and CEO of Porter in November.

The first phase of the joint venture started in June. The carriers are coordinating flight schedules and routes, and air travellers can now use either company’s platform to book direct and connecting flights with the other.

It means travellers can connect from Porter flights at Pearson Airport to Air Transat international destinations in Europe or tropical spots through one booking.

Check-in and baggage transfers through to the final destination should be simpler.

It is hoped the venture will strengthen each of the airline’s networks, add destinations and increase flight frequency.

Air Transat serves over 60 international destinations while Porter serves more than 30 destinations Canada and the United States.
